This article was on Ricky Gervais's performence as host at the recent Golden Globe Awards. Some critics and even actors thouhgt his jokes were to harsche. There are a lot of examples of jokes that he made in the artical, for instance starting the evening off by saying: 'Tonight is going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking, or as Charlie Sheen calls it, a monday..'. Nearing the end of the show, Ricky didn't come on stage for about an hour. There was a lot of speculation why that was. Maybe he got fired or told to tone it down a bit. Apperently it was all part of his act.
I actually saw Ricky Gervais' clip already before i read this article. It was hilarious. I really like these kind of hard jokes. I don't understand what all the fuss is about, I mean, c'mon, the're jokes for crying out loud. I also watched his act as host last year and it was hilarious as well. I would really recommend that you watch his video's on youtube or at the link above. He's really funny. Let me know what you guys think, is he being to rude?

Pierce Morgan has been hired by CNN to be their new lead interviewer, replacing Larry King. CNN was hoping that Morgan would bring some excitement en something new to the station. The writer talks about Morgans credentials, which many people don't know about him. He was an repoter for over 20 years as a journalist in britain, but he can never use those cridentials for himself because he got fired as editor of the daily mirror in 2004 because they published faked photos of Brittish troops abusing Iraqui prisoners. Still the writer concludes with that he does not think Morgan has got what it takes to replace Larry King.
There was a piece of the interview included in video and it was pretty interesting to watch. In fact, the whole article was pretty interesting to read because I only knew Pierce Morgan from Britain's got Talent and didn't know he used to be a journalist and didn't have any background in music or whatever. I think he's always really sincere and funny i hope his show is a big succes in the states. (and all over the world, because it will air in over 200 countries...)

This article is about the increase in pirate attacks and hostage taking incidents.
Overall, there were 445 pirate attacks last year, which is an increase of over 10 %. The pirate attacks are estimated to cost between 7 and 12 billion dollars each year. The Somali attacks took 1,016 hostages last year. Somali pirates are estimated to have 31 ships with over 700 crew on board.
Although naval patrols have fended off a number of attacks, Somali pirates are now operating farther offshore.
I think these pirate attacks are pretty stupid. Although they are probably only doing it to get food for their families because they can't fish or anything anymore, but still. The people that they are holding hostage are just normal hard working and innocent people who don't deserve that. please let me know what you guys think of these cowards...

In Tunisia a new government has been formed. They old president Zani al-abidine ben ali was overthrown last friday after a month of protest where 78 people died.
Tunisia's prime minister Mohammet Ghannouchi has formed a new government including some members of the old government, which caused quite a stir, but he defends his new governent. He says the retained ministers have 'clean hands' and that they can function well in the new government.
I dont really know what to think about this article. The thing I thought about while reading this was the upset about some of the former ministers staying in office. If a government for some reason isn't working or they are corrupt or whatever, that doesn't instanly mean that everybody in the government did a bad job or is corrupt. So why should it be such a problem if some ministers were to stay in office. (maybe because the new PM is somewhat loyal to the old president??( Plz let me know what you guys think.

This article is about the first trial of embryonic stem cell research in the US. AFter years of research, which cost $170m, a biotech company 'Geron' succeeded in getting the researh ready for human testing. The Food and Drug Administration in the US has therefor given a licence to Geron to use the controversial cells to treat people with spinal injuries. The company stated that it would still take years to know if the treatment was safe and effective.
Professor Chris Mason, an expert in regenerative medicine at University College London, said UK researchers hope to follow suit and begin trials next year with a stem cell treatment for age-related macular degeneration - a leading cause of blindness. Of course this is a very controversial subject. There are still a lot of discussions going on if stemm cells should even be allowed to be used.
I think this is great. Stem cell research should be used. If it can help people, than why not? As an atheist and a rational person:) I have no problem with abortion so why should i have a problem with this. This research can save so many lives. And btw, I think they can even get stem cells from the umbilical cord these days. I notice that reading this article led me to think about the discussion whether or not stem cell research should be allowed. Of course you know where I stand, but I'm curious about the way you guys feel about this subject. So let me know how you guys feel about this.

This column is about whether or not to ask the hard questions when it concerns rasicm and crime, by Yashmin Alibhai. Pakistani gang leaders are violating young girls in the UK. The victems are almost all white girls. Many different interviews and studies have shown that these Pakistani men see these girls as trash, asking to be wasted, unlike their own women who they shelter from the world. She thinks that these criminals sort of hide behind rasicm, because asking questions about what causes this in Pakistani or Asian men is very tricky.
She really convinced me to here statements by for instance saying that she herself is a moslum and cares deeply for migrant and their progress. Because her statements seem to be a bit right wing she starts out by saying that she considers herself to be a leffy, liberal, feminst etc.., but that she just can't led this continue without writing about it.
So she ends column with what i think is a great and bold end to the article, which I really can't summarise, so here it is:
Let's ask questions we never ask, to find out more than we ever try to. Do these men have any idea of normal, pleasurable, healthy sex between a man and a woman? Are they maddened by their own frustration and fear of females? I am not impugning those Asian or Pakistani men who love women, but those who are too messed up to understand what that means; maybe those whose key choices, including their lifelong partners, have all been made by families operating as firms.
I know this is really a summary and my reaction a bit together, but because it was a column with a lot subjective oppinions this just came out :)

Ford jail riot: police and Prison Service to investigate violence

This article is about a riot in the Ford jail on new years day. Twenty three inmates torched and wrecked certain buildings in the jail, including a recreation room with 10 new pool tables. The damage is estimated around 3 million pounds. The riot started after the inmates were being tested on illegal alchol comsumption. Two investigation will be held, one on the prisoners who were involved in the riots and one on the prison itself about why this could happen. It seemed that there were only 2 prison officers and 4 support staff present at the time to controll 500 prisoners. The Ford jail is an open prison, which means it houses class D prisoners who are deamed not to try and escape and who have more freedom. They also have easier acces to illegal substences than in normal prison. This sort of prison is normally for low-risk prisoners or prisoners who are soon to be released. But in this case those soon to be released prisoners weren't able to handle the freedom and their opportunities they got in the Ford Jail.
I think this is probably a one time incident which will never happen again, or maybe once in every 30 years or something like that. However, in my oppionion should this shouldn't be able to happen. I think the correctional system, in the UK or in Holland, costs enough money as it is. The 3 million pounds of damage should be prevented. Who will pay for the damages? Not those prisoners because they probably don't even have a dime in their bankaccounts and even if they did, I don't think they can hold them accountable for the damage, legally speaking that is.
One thing that was funny to me was that the prisoners were wearing balaclava's. (for you dutch people reading this, it means "bivakmutsen"). How in the hell did they get access to balaclaca's?????
