Ford jail riot: police and Prison Service to investigate violence

This article is about a riot in the Ford jail on new years day. Twenty three inmates torched and wrecked certain buildings in the jail, including a recreation room with 10 new pool tables. The damage is estimated around 3 million pounds. The riot started after the inmates were being tested on illegal alchol comsumption. Two investigation will be held, one on the prisoners who were involved in the riots and one on the prison itself about why this could happen. It seemed that there were only 2 prison officers and 4 support staff present at the time to controll 500 prisoners. The Ford jail is an open prison, which means it houses class D prisoners who are deamed not to try and escape and who have more freedom. They also have easier acces to illegal substences than in normal prison. This sort of prison is normally for low-risk prisoners or prisoners who are soon to be released. But in this case those soon to be released prisoners weren't able to handle the freedom and their opportunities they got in the Ford Jail.
I think this is probably a one time incident which will never happen again, or maybe once in every 30 years or something like that. However, in my oppionion should this shouldn't be able to happen. I think the correctional system, in the UK or in Holland, costs enough money as it is. The 3 million pounds of damage should be prevented. Who will pay for the damages? Not those prisoners because they probably don't even have a dime in their bankaccounts and even if they did, I don't think they can hold them accountable for the damage, legally speaking that is.
One thing that was funny to me was that the prisoners were wearing balaclava's. (for you dutch people reading this, it means "bivakmutsen"). How in the hell did they get access to balaclaca's?????

Well, there’s your answer. They got easier access to illegal things. But what I don’t understand is why they would damage the place if they’re staying in an open prison, I mean do they want to stay there or something? Now it is going to cost a lot of money and I think there should definitely be some measurements because the prisoners have shown they are not as reliable as the guards thought.
