WikiLeaks cables: India accused of systematic use of torture in Kashmir

This article is about documents leaked by wikileaks about torture in India. The indian government condones torture by security forces against the islamist militants of Kashmir. The international committee of the red cross (ICRC) has done research on this for years and reported over 600 cases of torture including beatings, electric schocks and sexual cases. US diplomats in Delhi were briefed by the ICRC and reported it to the US government.
In spite of my pro torture arguments in class, I am against this sort of torture. This torture is based on religion and even used on civilians and innocent people. I only agree with torture when it involves a terrorist who for example knows te location of a nuclear bomb which will kill 100.000 people.
I say, devide Kashmir into a islamic and hindoest part, the islamic can be incorparated or united with Pakistan and the hindoest part can join India. Problem solved!?

Spending cuts 'will see rise in absolute child poverty'

This article is about government spending cuts and the effect on child poverty. There is a big discussion about the consequenses of these spending cuts, whether or not these cuts will leed to an increase in child poverty. Government officials deny that whereas research economists and child activists say that the government program will push 200.000 children into poverty. Both sides disagree on the indicators of poverty.
Of course child poverty is a bad thing. Child poverty inhibits the cultivation and development of children. Nevertheless I agree with what the treasury spokesman said, that the cutting back on welfare is to incentivise work and remove people from getting stuck on welfare. I believe the same thing is happening in the Netherlands with the 'WAJONG'. The difference in welfare benifits and wages are so small that people rather stay at home for almost the same amount of money and I am strongly!!!! against that!!

Air India plane crash: 'Sleepy' pilot blamed

This article is about the plain crash in India in May of this year. Investigations have shown that the pilot of the aircraft was sleeping for most of the flight and was then affected by 'sleep inertia' which caused him to be disoriented and missed the runway by about 600 meters. Only 8 people survived. It also mentiones that the investigation report only went public after being seen by the Indian Parlement. Due to a tip the news came out a little earlier but the official report had to be approved by the Parlement.
This was a very short article and I don't really know how to give an opinion on this. Of course it was a awful accident and the pilot should not have been sleeping durnig the flight. It surprises me that the pilot was very experianced and has over 10.000 flight hours under his belt that he would do such a thing. It also is weird to me that the Parlement should have to approve of a report being made public. This is not something about national security or whatever what should be kept secret. The truth should be made public, especially for the families and friends of the victoms. But that is just my opinion, please let me know how you feel about this.

Eurozone to 'intensify' work to help Irish Republic,

This article is about the problems and the depts of the Irish Economy and whether the Europian Union should help out. It came out that the markets fear that the weaker europian countries (ireland, greece, austria) can not afford to pay off their depts. So now the EU is working on a plan if Ireland was to ask for help, because they have not done so yet, but they do expect it. Some are worried that things turn out the same as with greece (the have been bailed out and there depts turned out to be much bigger) and austria (has yet to submit it's December package)
I don't know much about the economy. Everybody who is interviewed in this article says that we have to work together to get over this economic crisis. Although these are all ministers of finance and most probably know the right thing to do, I don't agree. I don't think it is wise to let countries be admitted to the EU when they don't contribute anything or do not have there finances in order. I think, if the EU keeps bailing out and letting these countries be admitted to the EU, the Euro will lose a lot of value. That can not be good which ever way you look at it. Or am I just terribly wrong..........???

Why I am doing this blog.
I am doing this blog to learn about english culture and give my opinions on articles that I read.
I'm really looking forward to this period, because I don't really know anything about english culture or history, so I can probably learn a lot. I only know prejudices like the youth drink a lot and Enlgishmen are really white and that there are a lot of gingers and other misguided idea's.What I do know for sure is that the level of football is incredibly high, but anything else is pretty much unknown to me. That is why this period should be a lot of fun. I hope you will be enjoying my posts en please give me some feedback and/or comments. That would of course help me a lot.
